Happy Birthday Elvis - From a Local Elvis Presley Fan Club!

On January 8, 2007, Elvis Presley would have been 72 years old.

Although Turner Classic Movies had a film festival marathon of Elvis movies for viewers and fans to enjoy, not much else was said about Elvis' birthday, except brief reportings on some local news stations.

However, it was a different story for Elvis Presley fans in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The local Elvis Presley Fan Club of Sterling Heights Michigan hosted an Elvis Presley birthday party on January 8, 2007.

I had the privilege of being invited to the birthday party. Although I didn't know what to expect at first, it turned out to be a very festive occasion. When I got off the plane, I was greeted by local fan club spokesperson, Gloria Norton. Ms. Norton was wearing her fan club hat and coat, and provided me with a hat, and windbreaker jacket, with fan club logos all over it.

The small group of people who greeted me for this festive occasion created a little commotion from quite a bit of people at the airport, not to mention a little attention from airport officials. It was all in good fun. I was chauffeured to the airport hotel and settled in for the afternoon and prepared for the evening's occasion.

When I arrived at the local Lions Club Recreation Hall, I was surprised to find how elaborately the celebration was decorated. Not to mention the great crowd of people present to celebrate Elvis Presley's birthday. Wow. They didn't even know Elvis personally, and they went to all this trouble.

There were several tasty birthday cakes and finger foods available. There was a large-screen television showing highlights of Elvis movies, and live performances recorded in the 1950s, in 1970s. The people played games and shared their personal Elvis belongings to include photo albums, knickknacks, and small Elvis trinkets.

There was also a contest drawing, were the winner received a very nice Elvis painting along with a double CD set of Elvis songs from RCA records.

Although I did not win the contest drawing, I enjoyed the reaction from the couple who won the painting and CD set.

The highlight of the evening was a local Elvis impersonator who sang about a dozen songs, which included Heartbreak Hotel, Treat Me Nice, Can't Help Falling In Love, Love Me Tender, Blue Hawaii, and many more. The entertainer had a very impressive set up. He had a karaoke machine and PA system that sounded surprisingly good. He wore a white jumpsuit, reminiscent of the performances Elvis gave at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas back in the early 1970s.

The Elvis impersonator also sounded surprisingly good. I enjoyed watching him give away several scarves to the women in the audience. But the highlight of the evening was when he provided three senior citizen women with scarves. He sang songs to these ladies, gave them scarves, and brought tears to their eyes as he sang songs to them and spoke some kind words to them. Needless to say, it made their night, and mine as well.

The performance lasted about an hour, and the birthday party continued until a little after midnight. I was a little embarrassed to be called up to the front of the recreation hall and introduced to all of the Elvis fans as a reporter documenting the event. Oh well, it's all in the day's work. I enjoyed the cake, and snacks, and drinks provided by the festive occasion.

I was then given more gifts then I could squeeze in my suitcase to remind me of this occasion and new friends I had made this evening.

I had some trouble squeezing in all of the Elvis trinkets, memorabilia, and good luck charms that I was provided with from the good people of Sterling Heights. When I checked through security at the airport to go back home, an interesting thing happened.

One of my carry-on bags got some attention from the Department Of Home Security people. They asked me to step aside an open up my bag. One of the Elvis memorabilia gifts given to me was a small container of shampoo shaped like Elvis. The security people informed me that I was not allowed to carry this piece of memorabilia on the plane as it was against regulations. I had to leave my small Elvis shampoo holder at the airport. I wonder what would become of it?

If the airport security people are Elvis fans, no doubt it's probably sitting in their bathroom today.

The Truth About Elvis

If you really want to know the truth about Elvis Presley, I believe I know the answer. In other words, if all of the controversy and publicity has excited your curiosity of whether Elvis Presley is really alive or not, you've come to the right place.

Here's why:

There has been much research completed in this subject. Recently, the filmmaker Adam Muskiewicz has completed a film titled, The Truth About Elvis. Although I respect the filmmaker for his objective research and documentation, there is still no overwhelming evidence that Elvis is alive somewhere in hiding.

I believe it's mostly wishful thinking. Believe me, I would love to find out that Elvis Presley is really alive somewhere. As much as I would like it to be true myself, there is no evidence that he did not die. Furthermore, there is no evidence pointing to the fact that Elvis is alive and hiding somewhere. There is only speculation, and claims that he was seen somewhere.

Most of the cases that claim of his sighting are not even reliable. The question of whether Elvis was spotted or not seems to be similar to whether or not a UFO was really sighted. On August 16, 1977 it was announced that Elvis Presley was dead at 42 years old. If Elvis Presley was really alive, why would he be hiding?

Think about it. If Elvis were alive and wanted the ultimate privacy, he could have achieved it in this day and age of top technology. He would not have needed to go through the trouble of making everyone think he's dead.

On the other hand, if he did stage his own death on August 16, 1977, he has done a tremendous job at keeping it a secret. However, I don't believe it was part of Elvis Presley's character to pull such a thing off. Even though Elvis enjoyed his privacy by renting theaters and amusement parks, I believe he ultimately valued his fame and popularity even more.

Elvis loved being on stage and loved the excitement of a live audience. If Elvis were really alive somewhere and hiding, it means he would have given up the privilege of performing, and interacting with a live audience.

Again, I don't believe that it was in Elvis Presley's character to misrepresent himself and pull off such a hoax of this nature. Moreover, I believe he would have missed recording records, and performing on stage too much to do this. If it were true, did he or didn't he, let his family know about it?

Although it is very exciting and somewhat even romantic to dwell on the idea that Elvis Presley may be alive, the truth of the matter is, he's really dead.

Would Elvis Presley give up all rights to see and be a part of his daughter's life?

Even more important, he would have given up watching his grandchildren live and grow. You may be thinking to yourself that perhaps his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, was part of the hoax and remains to keep his identity a secret.

I don't believe this is the case, either. Lisa Marie Presley has gone down too many paths, and has lived a life that is reflective of losing a parent at a very young age. I don't believe she would have done the things she did, and lived the life she has over the years, while secretly visiting her father in some secret place.

I find it even harder to believe that Elvis was really alive, hiding somewhere, and this information was withheld from her. In other words, I don't believe for one minute that Lisa Marie Presley would not be given this information. I believe that Elvis loved his daughter too much to sacrifice not being able to see her and be a part of her life.

Let's go back to the theory that Elvis is hiding somewhere. Maybe he did inform Lisa Marie of this information and she has kept it secret, and still interacts with her father regularly. Maybe Elvis is a part of her life, and her childrens' lives.

Does this sound logical?

I don't think so.

If that were the case, she would be secretly visiting her father, sharing her grandchildren, her life and theirs, all in secret. Of course, the press or anyone else wouldn't have a clue about this information.

Does this sound like something real?

Does this sound like something that could be pulled off in our age of satellites that can take pictures of someone in the yard of their home?

So you have to believe in one of three theories. Elvis Presley is still alive and he did not tell his daughter of this secret information. Or, Elvis Presley is really alive and he told his daughter about it, who remains to keep it is secret, to this day.

Again, I believe that something would have happened over the years of her visitations, and Elvis' interactions with her and her family, that would have leaked information to the press.

Then we come to the theory that Elvis is really dead. This is the theory that seems to make the most sense. Even though this is the reasonable theory, most people cannot accept the fact of the truth about Elvis.

The truth about Elvis is, the man was an amazing recording artist, entertainer, and personality. However, he's dead. As much as I would like to relate different information, or reveal secret information, the truth is overwhelmingly obvious.

Elvis Lives - In Caleta de Fuste

Another hard night for me (joke); this time I am to watch Danny Summers perform his Elvis show.

I have seen Danny play in various bars around Caleta de Fuste a few times, and he’s always great, but tonight in front of 600 people he is fantastic. We are in the Hotel Barcelo in Caleta de Fuste, and the place is packed. They have a large performance area, and this is ideal for Danny’s act.

Being an Elvis fan, as I have been since I was eight, this was a real treat, he looks the part and sounds the part; in fact: Elvis lives…in Fuerteventura. Singing songs that spanned Elvis’ entire career, we are treated to American Trilogy, That’s Alright, Treat Me Nice, and Suspicious Minds, to start with, then later we are witness to fine versions of (Marie’s the Name) His Latest Flame, and even GI Blues and Its Now Or Never.

An impressive songbook and an impressive voice to match too, some would say, almost operatic in range.

His act is generally an hour, but he has been known to be on stage for up to two hours; so he obviously has a wealth of material to draw from. The stage at the Barcelo is well suited for a performer such as Danny, as he likes to move around and play up to the audience, as he does tonight. At one point he was singing to a child in the audience, and the crowd loved it; not so sure the child did, but that’s to be expected I guess.

In all, and as I said earlier, a great show from a performer that knows how to work an audience, and even brings his own jumpsuit. You can’t say fairer than that.

Catch Danny at the Barcelo in Caleta de Fuste on alternate Mondays from 2145pm. Or call +34664750321.

Costume Wigs

Wigs are a duplicate arrangement of real or synthetic hair that can be worn to hide baldness and hair loss. Apart from this basic purpose, many have effectively used wigs for various other reasons. It is obvious that people can't change their haircut, color and style as they please. This is because natural hair growth is a natural process that can't be hastened.

Theatrical groups use various costume wigs. They are often loud and overdone, similar to the true nature of theatre. It is obvious that a Victorian play would look incomplete without a seventeenth century hairdo. Classics that are performed would appear inadequate if men didn't wear their hair long. Costume wigs can effectively recreate a certain era or idea if used well. They are immensely popular during carnivals and road shows. Performers who partake in opening and closing ceremonies of world-renowned events use them. Since these performances revolve around elaborate dance, song and sequences it is important to find varieties that can be secured well. This is important because if costume wigs fall of during an act, it could cause distraction.

Fashion houses that strive to create outfits for a particular look use costume wigs extensively. Models usually walk the ramp with unique styled clothing, make up and well matched wigs. Costume wigs are available in various colors that include purple, orange, green and yellow. Such loud accessories are not meant to put of potential customers but help create a singular look.

Apart from this, detective and secret services use costume wigs. Well made wigs can help such professionals present false appearances without raising suspicion. They are used to change a person's appearance considerable and sometimes even take on a different nationality. Costume wigs are also worn during religious and ceremonial events to imitate a traditional look. The film industry also makes use of costume wigs for actors who are shooting for numerous films simultaneously. Since it is not possible for them to acquire numerous looks at the same time, costume wigs serve the purpose.

Elvis and the Golden Age of Rock and Roll Party

Elvis themed paper party goods can be popular retro-themes for many occasions honoring people aged eight to eighty. What's really fun is to combine the rock and roll theme with one of the settings of his comedy movies. Rock around the clock, Jail house blues or blue Hawaii themes then take the Elvis memorabilia to a new decorating plane.

Probably the best of these possible decorating themes would be an Elvis in Hawaii Luau/ beach party. This hybrid theme allows the host or hostess to draw from a lot of different sources for both paper party goods as well as games and menu ideas.

While the 50's era diner and rock-and-roll jukebox will be the simplified party theme there are also lots of Hawaiian Luau decorating ideas. The jailhouse rock Elvis party can feature a menu of bread and water. Better make than toasted bread cubes served with spinach dip in a hollowed out round bread loaf though. It wouldn't hurt matters if the water was one of those more expensive bottled varieties though. The color scheme for table cloths and centerpiece might be the basic black and white stripe. This might be a fun card party or other simple occasion.

By contrast the Elvis Hawaiian Luau party menu can be very elaborate and even include the whole hog roast of traditional island fare. These cooking instructions are very involved and require a lot of preparation but will create a memorable occasion. A simplified version of luau pork is probably available from a local restaurant for carry out. Order ahead and have an accurate head count so that guests will not be slighted on the main course.

Regardless of which kind of main dish -- whether pork or king crab -- always add tropical fruit dishes and pineapple is expected.

How To Find The Best Halloween Costume Shops

For a successful Halloween costume, you really need to start with the end in mind. What is it you want to be... Scary? Sexy? Glamorous? Just plain weird? If you've been invited to more than one party, you might even need more than one costume. After all, you might want to be a little more conservative at the office party than you would at your best friend's.

Once you have your goal in mind, a good costume shop will be able to help you get it together. You can buy your costume, but it can be a little too predictable if you wear the same one year after year. For that reason, a rental may be your best choice.

Of course, you can always opt for one of the pre-packaged costumes you'll find at your local store but honestly, they don't usually do it justice. If you spend the same money on a rental, you'll come out a lot further ahead.

A great costume really comes down to the little details. If you want to be unrecognizable on Halloween, these details can be critical. For example, a scary mask will hide your identity but it's far more effective to work with a costume shop that can use some theatrical makeup to completely transform you.

When your costume search is underway, be sure that you find a costume shop that offers everything you need. Some really don't have much of a selection so you'll have a much smaller chance of finding what you want.

Look for a shop that not only has the costume you want, but all the accessories you might need to personalize it and make it your own. Wigs, makeup, fake blood, fake cigarettes (complete with fake smoke) and other little things can make all the difference.
